105CNP2-26-1/3Several vertical marks were identified on a partial right parietal bone. Therelative thickness of the bone may represent an adult individual. There are three groupsof marks located below the external surface of the parietal boss (Figure 21). Theidentification of this type of mark demonstrates the possibility of animal modificationresembling the morphology of a human cut mark. These marks may also be mistakenfor animal gnawing, however, the morphology of the marks suggests that anothertaphonomic agent may have caused the modification. This may include the abrasion ofthe bone against a rough surface over time. Marks pointing to possible defleshingactivity would be located closer to the parietal boss and oriented in a horizontaldirection. The marks on this parietal are a good example of natural modifications thatcan be mistaken as caused by human activity.Fig. 21. Unidentified marks on right parietal (CNP2-26-1/3) from Cueva de Río ElDuende.
