Two activities are outlined below to determine a person's lung capacity.The datacollected from either can be plotted to find the distribution, the range and the averageof the volumes.The data could also be used to look at the relationship between weightand volume, height and volume, age and volume, athlete-nonathlete and volume, smokernonsmokerand volume,etCaStandard lung capacity for boys and girls is found using the following relationship:standard capacity in millilitres = height in centimetres x G23 ) or (20 \boys girls)This is just an average aud young boys and girls, especially in the growing years,should not be too concerned if they do not meet the standard.A fairly good indicatorof physical fitness is the ratio of maximum lung capacity to standard lung capacity.In general, the higher the ratio is, the better the physical fitness is.Maximum lung capacity:IUsing one deep breath blow up aballoon as much as possible.Forcethe balloon into a container filledto the top with water.Catch theamount of overflow in another container.Measure this overflow amountin millilitres to find maximum lungcapacity.IIBreathe deeply several times and thenexhale into the jar.Your air willforce water out the other tube.Measure this overflow amount in millimetresto find maximum lung capacity.ADAPTED FROM:Keeping Alive in Action Biology Series by Stanley L.
