[DMPUT~O~ DNDTW~~NVIODNM~NT(COIVTIIIlUED)One example of a student activity is about automobiles and air pollution. Thestudent is asked to find the amount of carbon monoxide in his residential districtat various times of the day. The student must find information on the number ofcars and the pollution production rate of each, then write the program, using givenformulas, to find the total amount of carbon monoxide. Additions to the originalprogram could be made to print out the concentration in parts per million, determinethe number of cars needed for the concentration to become lethal, change the site ofthe problem to two intersecting freeways, determine the effect wind has on the amountof pollution. The first activities do not require a sophisticated level of programmingskills and can be done by students with a brief introduction to a computer language.cMany similar activities are explained in detail in the Student Lab Booklet AirPollution and its companion Teacher's Advisor Book. Each book is available for approximately$1 from:Hewlett-Packard Computer Curriculum Project333 Logue AvenueMountain View, CA 94043Even if you do not have access to a computer, the booklets are an excellentsource for statistics, formulas, tables and charts.
