144III.IDEA FROM:(COWl"INU£O)Simplified Pulse Ratio Test:(a) While sitting, have the student count <strong>and</strong> record her heartbeats forone minute.(b) Have the student face a chair (approximately 45 cm high) <strong>and</strong> step upwith the left foot, up with the right, down with the left, <strong>and</strong> downwith the right. The student should do 30 of these steps in one minute.In order to set the cadence the teacher or another student can callout "up, up, down, down" at the required speed or playa taped recordingof the cadence.(c) Immediately after completing the 30 steps, the student should sit,count <strong>and</strong> record her heartbeats for two minutes.(d) Have the student write her pulse ratio. Pulse Ratio = Heartbeats for2 minutes following the exercise : Heartbeats for 1 minute beforeexercise. Simplify theratio by dividing the firstnumber by the second, correctto one decimal place.
