A <strong>for</strong>mulation approved both <strong>for</strong> use in the eye/ear is classified in S03,<br />

while <strong>for</strong>mulations only licensed <strong>for</strong> use in the eye or the ear are<br />

classified in S01 <strong>and</strong> S02, respectively.<br />

S01 OPHTHALMOLOGICALS<br />

Small amounts of antiseptics in eye preparations do not influence the<br />

<strong>classification</strong>, e.g. benzalconium.<br />

<strong>DDD</strong>s have been assigned <strong>for</strong> antiglaucoma preparations only.<br />

S01A ANTIINFECTIVES<br />

This group comprises plain <strong>and</strong> combined antiinfective preparations <strong>for</strong><br />

ophthalmological use.<br />

Combinations with corticosteroids are classified in S01CA -<br />

Corticosteroids <strong>and</strong> antiinfectives in combination.<br />

S01AA Antibiotics<br />

Combinations of different antibiotics (incl. sulfonamides) are classified<br />

at a separate 5th level: S01AA30.<br />

Combinations with other drugs (e.g. sympathomimetics) are classified at<br />

a separate 5th level: S01AA20.<br />

Combinations with antiinflammatory agents are classified in group<br />

S01C.<br />

S01AB Sulfonamides<br />

S01AD Antivirals<br />

Combinations with antibiotics are classified in S01AA.
