Journalistic Narrative: a Story of Real LifeMiriam Bauab Puzzonature of facts instead of relating it impartially. So that is the way Eliane Brum’s reportsconfigure.Narrative reportThe new journalism introduces the real facts of life in a different way, using theexpressive language to touch the reader <strong>and</strong> makes him/her to view things in another wayhe/she couldn’t perceive. The new journalism seeks to show the facts that are not normallyaired in the press committed to objectivity.This type of text was introduced by reporters like Capote <strong>and</strong> Gay Talese. The sameoccurs in Brazilian journalism, after Joel Silveira <strong>and</strong> some others. Eliane Brum turned shortreports in literary pieces like a chronic. In the collection The life that nobody sees (2006), thejournalist presents to the reader narratives about people that have no importance to the dailypress. They live outside, at the environment of the great urban centers, <strong>and</strong> they are almostinvisible to the public reader of daily press. “Signal closed to Camila” is an example of this kin<strong>do</strong>f narrative that tells us a story of a poor little girl that lives on the street asking for money tosurvive. The chorus she used is the introduction of her story: “Beautiful uncle, beautiful auntof my heart. I ask if you <strong>do</strong>n’t have a buck or something like for this poor little girl” (p.126).The report tells us her story: she was a ten-year-old little girl who, like many othersgirls <strong>and</strong> boys, was living in a quarter far from <strong>do</strong>wntown of Porto Alegre (Brazil), namedBom Jesus. Her parents were unemployed <strong>and</strong> the girl since she was six years old stays onthe street near the traffic lights begging for money. She was captured by the city police <strong>and</strong>was taken to a children reformatory from where she escaped many times. The last time sheescaped with five girls, <strong>and</strong> they walked aimlessly through the city. As it was very hot thatSunday, Camila <strong>and</strong> two other girls decided to take a bath in Guaíba river, near the park ofBrasil Marine, but Camila did not know how to swim <strong>and</strong> sank into the river. On Monday thefamily took notice about the girl’s death, but The Legal Medical Department did not care togive information to the family, that had to wait till Tuesday to bury the corpse. As the familywas very poor <strong>and</strong> the social institution that takes care of underage people has neglectedthe care of the girls <strong>and</strong> took no action on the trail of the girls, the department decided topay the funeral, that was verging on the ostentatious: “Paid also to a funeral chapel withconditioning air” (p.128). The funeral conditions contrast with the poverty of the family, thatwas miserable. So the relatives was delighted with it: “What a beautiful place, the familyrepeats amazed at the space so big <strong>and</strong> green ,accompanied by an entourage of relatives’defeated faces”(p.128).As the speaker wants to demonstrate the contrast between the living conditions ofthose family members, including Camila, with the refined funeral atmosphere, the narratorrelies on the intelligence of the reader to realize the contradiction.Thus, Brum qualifies the reader as an interpreter of conflicting voices expressed in thestatement, the narrator’s reporting <strong>and</strong> describing the original environment of Camila <strong>and</strong>their relatives, as opposed to the delighted expressions on the scene of death, as if the deadmattered little at that time.<strong>Narratives</strong> <strong>and</strong> social memory: theoretical <strong>and</strong> metho<strong>do</strong>logical approaches137
