Colonial Missions in the North American Southwest: Social Memory and EthnogenesisMariah Wadeamong Native and mestizo populations we would not be discussing the issue. In the present,these colonized peoples make choices rooted in the past but actionable in the present. Formany years, I have worked with the Adai, a Native American tribe formerly of Texas andtoday located in eastern Louisiana. The Adai appeared in the historic record in the midseventeenthcentury and persist today. They are profoundly Catholic though their ritualsinclude many Native American traditions. Interestingly, and despite their refusal to acceptChristianity in the colonial past, Catholicism is an integral part of their individual identitiesand the defining element of their modern tribal identity.ReferencesAppiah, A.
