‘Diaspora Space’ as Heard <strong>and</strong> ObservedDaiva RepeckaiteAll of the chosen methods captured the processes of identity restructuring, enthusiasm forintegration or disillusionment with its prospects, <strong>and</strong> various patterns in which Russianspeakersshare their ‘cultural codes’ <strong>and</strong> common ideas about their new homel<strong>and</strong>. Whilethe methods complemented each other in my fieldwork, I could also see that the resultsobtained using each of them were rather different.This article attempts to provide a meta-analysis of the ways in which diverse researchmethods captured parts of the picture in my fieldwork. After explaining the particularities ofmigration from the former USSR to Israel, it proceeds to a theoretical <strong>and</strong> metho<strong>do</strong>logicaldiscussion <strong>and</strong> then presents the analysis of diaspora spaces <strong>and</strong> cultural codes, using theearlier insights.Contextualizing ethnic migration to IsraelOver the past two decades ethnic migration to Israel has been admittedly called alaboratory for theories of ethnicity. By ethnic migration, or diaspora migration, I mean migrationto a country that specifically invites members of a certain ethnic group <strong>and</strong> grantsthem privileges, such as citizenship or easier access to its labor market. Ethnic migrationas such can be polycentric. Diaspora migration is based on a perception of an ethnicallydefined group having one center (a nation-state) <strong>and</strong> a presence elsewhere. Israel was builtas a country for ‘ingathering of exiles’ – any person with Jewish ancestry up to the thirdgeneration <strong>and</strong> spouses thereof have the right to settle in Israel <strong>and</strong> obtain its citizenship.Jewish ethnic migration also took other directions (to the US <strong>and</strong> Germany), where they wereconsidered refugees.According to Joppke (2005), diaspora migration, although a unique phenomenon, isstill a border-crossing movement of non-citizens, so in legal terms <strong>and</strong> everyday perceptionthis movement still constitutes migration. In her critical reflection on diaspora studies, Angpoints at the problematic points of the way diaspora is conceptualised, including rupturewith the past rather than continuation, focus on heritage as a constraining factor instea<strong>do</strong>f hybridity <strong>and</strong> transformation, <strong>and</strong> the notion of non-belonging, which contributes to theperceived inferiority of the diaspora vis-à-vis the nation state (Ang, 2011). Due to a complexset of circumstances Russian-speaking ethnic migrants in Israel have effectively resistedthe pressure for assimilation <strong>and</strong> produced a distinct cultural space they can call home. Onthe other h<strong>and</strong>, stereotypes associated with the former USSR followed them to their newhomel<strong>and</strong>. People from the former USSR were construed as ‘inept or h<strong>and</strong>icapped’ vis-à-visthe dem<strong>and</strong>s of capitalist economy (Eriksen, 1991, p. 136), pragmatic rather than patriotic,<strong>and</strong> resistant to full cultural integration.Migration of eligible persons from the USSR to Israel started already in the 1970s, butat the time it was an exceptional right, whereas in the late 1980s <strong>and</strong> early 1990s, followingthe breakup of the USSR, social <strong>and</strong> economic insecurity pushed eligible individuals to try thismigration route, as other traditionally popular routes (the US <strong>and</strong> Canada) became unavailable.The context of their migration was changing together with pressures against the so-called‘caretaker state’, which was a key mechanism in Israel for integrating Jewish immigrants.<strong>Narratives</strong> <strong>and</strong> social memory: theoretical <strong>and</strong> metho<strong>do</strong>logical approaches243
