The memory of this movement isscarce <strong>and</strong> its historical accounts are too few <strong>and</strong> scattered. Starting from a set of public<strong>do</strong>cuments about this movement which were <strong>do</strong>nated to one of the researchers, we triedto recreate the memory of this social movement, integrating it in a line of oral <strong>and</strong> socialhistory research on the twentieth century’s Porto. In this article we will be focusing on thetheoretical <strong>and</strong> metho<strong>do</strong>logical foundations of this research project. The metho<strong>do</strong>logicalpath chosen for this project is based on <strong>do</strong>cumental analysis <strong>and</strong> oral history, seeking torevive the individual <strong>and</strong> collective memories of these protagonists, not only recreatingthe memory of this social movement but also to acknowledge the importance of theparticipation in these social struggles for these women.KeywordsUnitary Commissions of Women from Porto; social struggle; women’s movements; oralhistory; preservation of social memory; life storiesIntroductionThis article emerges from a research project – Estratégias de luta e recomposição identitária:Impacto sócio cultural das Comissões Unitárias de Mulheres <strong>do</strong> Porto – developed between2011 <strong>and</strong> 2012, at the Faculty of Psychology <strong>and</strong> Education Sciences of Porto University, <strong>and</strong>supported by the University of Porto <strong>and</strong> Sant<strong>and</strong>er bank, focused on the Unitary Commissionsof Women from Porto. The project is part of a body of research on Portuguese social struggles,aiming at the preservation <strong>and</strong> dissemination of social, cultural <strong>and</strong> political memory, <strong>and</strong>social <strong>and</strong> oral history of Porto on the twentieth century, particularly on a set of significantevents <strong>and</strong> relevant entities of the recent history of social movements in Portugal.The Commissions of Women from Porto, partially since they had a relatively circumscribedexistence or action in time, have barely merited the attention of the analytical eyesof academia <strong>and</strong> got dispersed in History.
