It is not enabled by default (most likely to maintaincompatibility with other manufacturers' switches that may not be so lucky). Toenable RSTP globally, go to the Global config:Switch(config)#spanning-tree 802-1wNotice that you use a “-” instead of a “.” to separate the “2” from the “1.” Thiscan get confusing, so you'll see a lot of more experienced engineers simplyusing the short-cut:Switch(config)#span 8This command accomplishes the exact same thing. You can also define theswitch's priority:Switch(config)#spanning-tree 802-1w priority 10When dealing with RSTP, it's wise to define the individual interfaces in one oftwo types. The premise of these types if very similar to STP's Fast Port Spanand Fast Uplink Span:• Admin-edge-port. This is a similar concept to Fast Port Span in STP.There's no timer change (as RSTP doesn't use timers in the same way),but you've defined this port as a dead end (e.g., a workstation, a server,etc.).• Admin-pt2pt-mac. This is a similar concept to Fast Uplink Span in STP.You are defining this port as a “point-to-point” connection.
