GlossaryPing A common name for ICMP's “echo” and “echo reply” services. This providesa simple way to tell if a network host is reachable. The client sends an“echo” (or “echo request”), and the destination replies with an “echo reply.”Poison reverse This is a method of preventing routing loops in RIP. If a routerreceives a route advertised on the same link that it advertised the same routeout of, it will set the hop count of that route to 16 (unreachable).Policy-Based Caching This defines a method of Web caching that allows thedesigner to be selective about which sites are cached.Policy Based SLB This describes a method of load balancing to certain groupsof servers depending on the source IP address of the incoming client.Predictor This is the method that a ServerIron uses to load balance to its realservers. There are several different predictors that a given virtual server canuse, including round-robin, least connections, and weighted.Presentation Layer This is the sixth layer of the OSI Reference Model. Thislayer formats the data it receives from the Application Layer. It prepares thedata for presentation.Private IP address This refers to RFC 1918. This standard states that thereare several ranges of IP addresses that will not be publicly routed through theInternet. They are reserved for private IP networks.Promiscuous mode When packet capturing, the client's NIC must be placedinto promiscuous mode. In this mode, the NIC will receive all frames, not justthe frames that are specifically addressed to it.QoS Quality of Service. This provides the ability to shape traffic, give certaintypes of traffic precedence, etc. It uses priority queues defined in IEEE 802.1p.RADIUS Remote Authentication Dial In User Service. This is service that providescentralized user authentication.Real server This is a physical server to which a load balancer is sending data.It is the recipient of the load balancer. A load balancer answers incomingrequests through a virtual server. Then, the load balancer passes the requestto the real server.Reassign threshold Between routine health checks, the reassign thresholdmarks the number of failed hand-offs the ServerIron will tolerate before itdeclares a real server inactive.RIP Routing Information Protocol. This is a distance vector routing protocolthat bases its decision by the shortest hop count. Given two paths to the samedestination, it will choose the path that traverses the fewest number of routersto get to its destination.RMON Remote Monitoring. This is a protocol that collects real-time SNMPdata over time. This data is used to track a switch's performance or to helpdiagnose problems. Data can include CPU statistics, interface counters, andmore.416 Brocade IP Primer
