GlossaryTAC Technical Assistance Center. The Brocade TAC is the organization to callwhen you need assistance with your Brocade products.TACACS Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System. This is a servicethat provides centralized user authentication.TCP Transmission Control Protocol. This is a Layer 4 protocol that providesconnection-oriented service. It provides windowing, flow control and acknowledgments,making certain that the data reaches its destination and in theorder that was intended.TCP/<strong>IP</strong> Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This describes a suiteof protocols on Layers 3 through 7, including <strong>IP</strong>, ICMP, TCP, UDP, HTTP, FTP,SNMP, and more. This is easily the most popular suite of protocols in usetoday, and it is the protocol suite of the Internet.TCS Transparent Cache Switching. Using ServerIrons, this provides the abilityto cache Web sites for end users. It is transparent because the end user doesnot need to change any of its configurations. The caching happens without anyend-user interaction.Telnet This is a Layer 7 protocol providing access to the command line of aremote host. This protocol has waned in popularity, due to the fact that it transmitsall of its data (including username and password information) in cleartext. A more secure choice, providing the same services and more, would beSSH.Terminal emulator In the earlier days of computing, you would access theresources of a mainframe by connecting a “dumb terminal” (a device with amonitor and keyboard that you connected via serial). This would give youaccess to the mainframe's command line. To access the serial console of adevice today, you need a serial connection, but you need software to accessthe serial connection and provide an interface to the command line (just likethe terminal). This software is called a terminal emulator (as it emulates aterminal).TFTP Trivial File Transfer Protocol. This is a Layer 7 protocol that provides simplisticfile transfer capabilities. This is commonly used to transfer softwareimages and configurations to and from network devices.Three-way (3-way) handshake When initiating a TCP session, the hostsinvolved participate in a 3-way handshake. The client sends a TCP SYN segmentto the server. The server replies to the client with a TCP SYN/ACKsegment. Finally, the client replies to the server with a TCP ACK segment. TheTCP session has now been initiated.TLD Top-Level Domain. In DNS, this is the second-highest point of the namehierarchy. It is recognized by a short two to four character name. Examples ofTLDs include com, net, org, and edu.Topology Group This is used with MST.
