PREPARATION OF Pd/γAl 2 O 3 CATALYST FOR SELECTIVEHYDROGENATION OF ACETYLENE IN EXCESS ETHYLENEKarim H. HassanDepartment of Chemistry, College of Science, University of Diyala, Iraqe-mail: drkarim1953@yahoo.comPP-20In petrochemical industry, and mainly in ethylene production plants, acetylenepresents in trace amount in ethylene gas and causes a serous problems owing to it ishigher activity and being explosive at certain concentration limits with air, so it has tobe converted to ethylene in selective hydrogenation. The selective hydrogenation catalyst Pd / Al 2 O 3 used in a selective acetylenehydrogenation was prepared .Three catalysts with 0.03 %, 0.05% and 0.07 % wt ofpalladium loaded on activated alumina were prepared by impregnation method. Thecatalysts were then characterized and the physical and chemical properties weredetermined. The activities of these catalysts were tested in a laboratory unit at150 °C and atmospheric pressure and compared with the commercial one.It has been observed from the results that the prepared catalyst of 0.05 % Pdshows a very good conversion and selectivity if compared with the commercialcatalyst, as it s activity in the hydrogenation of acetylene exceeds 97.5 % calculatedas total acetylene hydrogenated to ethylene, in addition of being operated at lowertemperatures. With this catalyst it is possible to operate for longer times and it ispossible also to increase the operation time by raising the temperature as the activitydeclined.109
