KN-4POLYOXOMETALATES AS CATALYSTS FOR SUSTAINABLEORGANIC SYNTHESISIvan KozhevnikovUniversity of Liverpool, Liverpool L69 7ZD, UK, E-mail: kozhev@liverpool.ac.ukAmong numerous applications of polyoxometalates (POMs) catalysis is by far themost important, offering significant economical and environmental benefits. The aimof this presentation is to discuss recent results of the author’s group on theapplication of POMs as acid and bifunctional acid-metal catalysts for chemicalsynthesis using renewable feedstocks such as terpenes, glycerol and acetone.Heteropoly acids (HPAs) are demonstrated to be efficient and environmentallyfriendly catalysts for acid-catalyzed terpene transformations such as hydration, acetoxylation, cyclization and isomerization in homogeneous and heterogeneoussystems. These reactions can provide clean routes to valuable ingredients andintermediates for the fragrance and pharmaceutical industries.Recent development of biodiesel production has made a large amount of glycerolavailable as a renewable feedstock for the synthesis of chemicals. One of the mostimportant directions for the utilisation of glycerol is its dehydration to acrolein. POMsare amongst the most efficient catalysts for this reaction. We have found that theacidic heteropoly salt, Cs 2.5 H 0.5 PW 12 O 40 (CsPW), is a very active catalyst for glycerolto-acroleindehydraion in the gas phase. Doping CsPW with platinum group metalsand co-feeding hydrogen reduces coke deposition thus enhancing catalystperformance.POM-based multifunctional catalysts can effectively carry out multistep reactionsin one pot (one catalyst bed) without separating intermediate products. Discussedexamples include one-step hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol andsynthesis of methyl isobutyl ketone from acetone using POMs doped with platinumgroup metals as catalysts.18
