MAGIC-USER SPELLS (1ST LEVEL)per level of the magic-user casting the spell, but it can move small obiectsup to 1' in a direction directly away from the caster, topple an obiect underthe proper conditions, or cause a creature to lose its balance. An exampleof the latter use is causing a creature attacking to lose its balance when itis attacking, for if the creature foils its saving throw, it will not be able toattack that round. Of course, the mass of the creature attacking cannotexceed the force of the push by more than a factor of 50, i.e. a 1st levelmagic-user cannot effectively push a creature weighing more than 50pounds. A push spell employed against an obiect held by a creature willcause it to subtract the force of the spell in foot pounds (1, 2, 3, etc.) fromits chance to hit or add to opponent saving throws as applicable if thecreature foils to make its saving throw against magic when the spell is cast. The material component of this spell is a small pinch of powdered brasswhich must be blown from the palm prior to pointing at the obiect of thespell.Read Magic (Divination) Reversiblelevel: IRange: 0Duration: 2 rounds/levelArea of Effect: SpecialComponents: V, S, MCasting Time: I roundSaving Throw: NoneExplanation/Description: By means of a read magic spell, the magic-useris able to read magical inscriptions on objects - books, scrolls, weaponsand the like - which would otherwise be totally unintelligible to him orher. (The personal books of the magic-user, and works already magicallyread, are intelligible.) This deciphering does not normally invoke themagic contained in the writing, although it may do so in the case of a cursescroll. Furthermore, once the spell is cast and the magic-user hos read themagical inscription, he or she is thereafter able to read that particularwriting without recourse to the use of the read magic spell. The durotion ofthe spell is 2 rounds per level of experience of the spell caster. Thematerial component for the spell is a clear crystal or mineral prism. Notethat the material is not expended by use. The reverse of the spell, unreadable magic, makes such writing completely unreadable to anycreature, even with the aid of a read magic, until the spell wears off or themagic is dispelled. The material components for the reverse spell are apinch of dirt ond a drop of water.Shocking Grasp (Alteration)Level: IRonge: TouchDuration: One touchArea of Effect: Creature touchedMAGIC-USER SPELLS (1ST LEVEL)Components: V, SCasting Time: I segmentSaving Throw: NoneExplanation/Description: When the magic-user costs this spell, he or shedevelops o powerful electrical charge which gives o jolt to the creaturetouched. The shocking grasp delivers from 1 to 8 hit points damage (d8),plus 1 hit point per level of the magic-user, i.e. a 2nd level magic-userwould discharge a shock causing 3 to 10 hit points of damage. While themagic-user must only come close enough to his or her opponent to lay ohond on the opponent's body or upon on electrical conductor whichtouches the opponent's body, o like touch from the opponent does notdischarge the spell.Sleep (Enchantment/Charm)Level: IRange: 3" + I"/levelDuration: 5 roundsAeve1Area of Effect: SpecialExplanation/Description: When a magic-user casts a sleep spell, he or shewill usually cause a comatose slumber to come upon one or morecreatures [other than undead and certain other creatures specificallyexcluded (see ADVANCED DUNGEONS 8 DRAGONS, MONSTERMANUAL) from the spell's effects]. The shield also adds +1 to the magic-user's soving throwdice v3. attacks which are basically frontal. Note that all benefits of thespell accrue only to attacks originating from the front facing the magicuser, where the shield can move to interpose itself properly.Explanation/Description: A spider climb spell enables the recipient toclimb and travel upon vertical surfaces just as a giant spider is able to do,i.e. at 3" movement rote, or even hang upside down from ceilings. Notethat the affected creature must have bare hands and feet in order to climbin this manner. During the course of the spell the recipient cannot handleobiects which weigh less than 50 g.p., for such obiects will stick to thecreature's hands/feet, so a magic-user will find it virtually impossible tocast spells if under a spider climb dweomer. The material components ofthis spell are a drop of bitumen and a live spider, both of which must beeaten by the spell recipient.Tenser's Floating Disc (Evocation)Level: IRonge: 2"Duration: 3 turns + I turn/levelArea of Effect: SpecialComponents: V, S, MCosting Time: I segmentSaving Throw: NoneExplanation/Description: With this spell, the caster creates the circularplane of null-gravity known as Tenser's Floating Disc after the famedwizard of that appellation (whose ability to locate treasure and his greedto recover every copper found ore well known).
