Driving Your <strong>Mazda</strong>Starting and DrivingN (Neutral)In N, the wheels and transaxle are notlocked. The vehicle will roll freely evenon the slightest incline unless the parkingbrake or brakes are on.WARNINGShifting fr<strong>om</strong> N or P:It's dangerous to shift fr<strong>om</strong> N or Pinto a driving gear when the engine isrunning faster than idle. If this isdone, the vehicle could move suddenly,causing an accident or serious injury.If the engine is running faster thanidle, don't shift fr<strong>om</strong> N or P into adriving gear.Shifting into N while Driving:Shifting into N while driving isdangerous. Engine braking cannot beapplied when decelerating whichcould lead to an accident or seriousinjury. Do not shift into N whendriving the vehicle.CAUTIONDo not shift into N when driving thevehicle. Doing so can cause transaxledamage.D (Drive)D is the normal driving position. Fr<strong>om</strong> astop, the transaxle will aut<strong>om</strong>atically shiftthrough a 4-gear/5-gear * sequence.* 2.3-liter engine modelM (Manual)M is the manual shift mode position.Gears can be shifted up or down byoperating the shift lever.Refer to Manual Shift Mode (page 5-13).qShift-Lock SystemThe shift-lock system prevents shiftingout of P unless the brake pedal isdepressed.To shift fr<strong>om</strong> P:1. Depress and hold the brake pedal.2. Start the engine.3. Move the shift lever.NOTEllWhen the ignition switch is in theACC or LOCK position, the shiftlever cannot be shifted fr<strong>om</strong> P.To be sure the vehicle is in park, theignition key cannot be removedunless the shift lever is in P.qShift-Lock OverrideIf the shift lever won't move fr<strong>om</strong> P usingthe proper shift procedure, continue tohold down the pedal.1. Remove the shift-lock override coverwith a screwdriver.5-12
