Maintenance and CareOwner MaintenanceEngine CoolantqInspecting Coolant LevelWARNINGHot Engine:A hot engine is dangerous. If theengine has been running, parts of theengine c<strong>om</strong>partment can bec<strong>om</strong>e veryhot. You could be burned. Carefullyinspect the engine coolant in thecoolant reservoir, but do not open it.Do not use a match or live flame in theengine c<strong>om</strong>partment. DO NOT ADDCOOLANT WHEN THE ENGINE ISHOT.Inspect the antifreeze protection andcoolant level in the coolant reservoir atleast once a year―at the beginning of thewinter season―and before travelingwhere temperatures may drop belowfreezing.Inspect the condition and connections ofall cooling system and heater hoses.Replace any that are swollen ordeteriorated.The coolant should be at full in theradiator and between the MAX and MINmarks on the coolant reservoir when theengine is cool.Cooling Fan and EngineInspection:Inspecting the engine with the ignitionswitch in the ON position isdangerous. The cooling fan could turnon unexpectedly even when the engineisn't running. You could be seriouslyinjured by the fan. Turn the ignitionswitch off and remove the key fr<strong>om</strong> theignition switch when you inspect theengine.Cooling System Cap:When the engine and radiator are hot,scalding coolant and steam may shootout under pressure and cause seriousinjury. Don't remove the coolingsystem cap when the engine andradiator are hot.If it's at or near MIN, add enough coolantto the coolant reservoir to providefreezing and corrosion protection and tobring the level to MAX.CAUTIONRadiator coolant will damage paint.Rinse it off quickly if spilled.If the coolant reservoir is empty or newcoolant is required frequently, consult anAuthorized <strong>Mazda</strong> Dealer.8-21
