Polio and AFP (Acute Flaccid Paralysis)Polio is one of communicable disease that can be prevented throughimmunization. It is caused by polio virus infecting nervous system and leading toparalysis. Polio commonly infects children on 0‐3 years of age. The disease can beindicated through symptoms i.e fever, headache, nausea, stiff on neck, and ilness onleg and feet.Meanwhile AFP is an abnormal condition when there is a degradation ofmuscle strength due to uncertain causes. The abnormality may continue to paralysis.In order to measure performance of AFP surveillance, DG of Disease Control andEnvironmental <strong>Health</strong> has established Non Polio AFP Rate. It may indicate non polioAFP cases among children < 15 years of age. DG of Disease Control and Environmental<strong>Health</strong> has established minimun target of the indicator at 2 per 100,000 children < 15years of age. Non polio AFP rate in <strong>2010</strong> was 2.62 per 100,000 children < 15 years ofage. The following graph describes non polio AFP rate per 100,000 children < 15years of age in 33 provinces.59
