The Department may also, where extremely gravetransgressi<strong>on</strong>s have occurred, resort to declare <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fender pers<strong>on</strong>an<strong>on</strong> grata <strong>and</strong>/or request that <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fender's immunity be withdrawnto be brought before a court to st<strong>and</strong> trial.1.12.9 Drivers should <strong>the</strong>refore familiarise <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong>stipulati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relevant traffic regulati<strong>on</strong>s before venturing <strong>on</strong>South African roads. A brief synopsis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most importantelements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regulati<strong>on</strong>s are as follows:(a)Driving under <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> drugs or alcohol is c<strong>on</strong>sidered a veryserious <strong>of</strong>fence in South Africa. Missi<strong>on</strong> pers<strong>on</strong>nel should acquaint<strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> legal alcohol limit allowed when driving amotor vehicle.(b)Should Missi<strong>on</strong> pers<strong>on</strong>nel refuse to be subjected to a blood orbreath alcohol test, <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al Relati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong>Cooperati<strong>on</strong> may view such a refusal as a possible transgressi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Republic’s drinking <strong>and</strong> driving laws <strong>and</strong> reserves <strong>the</strong> right totake fur<strong>the</strong>r acti<strong>on</strong>.Page 34 <strong>of</strong> 90
