2009 <strong>CityMatCH</strong> Urban MCH Leadership <strong>Conference</strong>• To eliminate inequalities in healthy eating and physical activity due to race, ethnicity, culture, gender,age, disabilities and socioeconomic status.The CornerstonesThere are five overarching critical elements to help people in communities be physically active and eatwell. They are: access, collaboration, science and research, workforce and communications. Theseelements are <strong>the</strong> cornerstones around which <strong>the</strong> Blueprint is organized. Each cornerstone has at least threestrategies with accompanying action steps recommended by experts and leaders in <strong>the</strong> field of nutritionand physical activity. Each community can adapt <strong>the</strong>se strategies to fit more closely with <strong>the</strong>ir needs.ACCOMPLISHMENTS/RESULTSThe Blueprint has been used in a number of states to create programs and resources intended to improve<strong>the</strong> eating and activity patterns of communities. <strong>Examples</strong> include: better integration of nutrition servicesinto Kansas MCH programs; <strong>the</strong> development of a community needs assessment in Utah; a SouthCarolina healthy eating and active living issue coalition; in Alabama a comprehensive state wellness plan;and o<strong>the</strong>rsBARRIERSMany public health professionals who would benefit <strong>from</strong> using <strong>the</strong> Blueprint are not aware that it exists.Outreach to public health professionals is needed to ensure <strong>the</strong> use of this tool.LESSONS LEARNEDThe Blueprint is an easy to use tool that is well received by public health professionals once <strong>the</strong>y areaware of <strong>the</strong> resource. The Blueprint helps public health professionals incorporate evidenced basednutrition and physical interventions into programs and activities to support healthy communities.100
