Our program participants faced several barriers in trying to access mental health services such astransportation, child care, lack of or insufficient health insurance, a shortage of psychiatrists whichextends <strong>the</strong> waiting time for an appointment to at least six weeks, and mistrust of <strong>the</strong> medical system.SETTINGOffice space for <strong>the</strong> psychiatric services was co-located within our program’s offices. Our intendedaudience was ei<strong>the</strong>r pregnant or postpartum women who were enrolled in our program and scored highenough on <strong>the</strong> depression screen to warrant evaluation by a psychiatrist.PROJECTWe partnered with Women’s Behavioral HealthCARE at <strong>the</strong> Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic toprovide psychiatric services for our participants suffering with depression. The pilot was named HealthyStart CARES. The services were provided one afternoon per week for five months. Child care,transportation, and <strong>the</strong> services were free. During <strong>the</strong> office visits <strong>the</strong> participant could have any of herHealthy Start staff present with her. Letters were sent to <strong>the</strong> participants’ PCP’s to inform <strong>the</strong>m of <strong>the</strong>participant’s treatment status. Home visiting continued during <strong>the</strong> participants’ treatment.ACCOMPLISHMENTS/RESULTSSixteen of twenty-nine participants who were referred to <strong>the</strong> pilot project came for services. The averagewait for an appointment with <strong>the</strong> psychiatrist was two weeks. Ten participants had lowered <strong>the</strong>ir scores on<strong>the</strong> depression screen. Those participants who wanted to include medication in <strong>the</strong>ir treatment receivedprescriptions that were affordable and easy to obtain. The Healthy Start staff maintained <strong>the</strong>ir home visitswith <strong>the</strong> participants, monitoring <strong>the</strong>ir progress and implementing <strong>the</strong> strategies that were devised when<strong>the</strong>y came to <strong>the</strong> CARES project. The scores on <strong>the</strong> client satisfaction surveys showed a high rate of117
