Prematurity/low birth weight is <strong>the</strong>leading cause of death for African-American infants.SETTINGTo address this disparity, <strong>the</strong> March of Dimes Texas Chapter launched <strong>the</strong> Honey Child PrenatalEducation Program in 2006. Honey Child is a faith-based prenatal education program that couples groupeducation and mentoring to mediate risk factors associated with preterm births in African Americanwomen. In 2008, <strong>the</strong> March of Dimes Texas Chapter piloted Honey Child in five churches in Texas.PROJECTThe church provides a trusted site conveniently located within <strong>the</strong> neighborhood to focus on heathpromotion. Group facilitators and mentors are drawn <strong>from</strong> local churches. The program is intended foruse by lay facilitators and mentors who have received specialized training <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> March of DimesTexas Chapter’s staff and volunteers.The intervention takes place in a church setting and targets African American pregnant women with aspecific focus on women ages 18-36. The Honey Child prenatal curriculum includes six two-hoursessions. Topics include nutrition, stress reduction, prenatal care, self-esteem, preterm labor, and laborand delivery. The mentor’s role is critical in not only providing social support but also providing gentleaccountability for positive health behaviors outside of <strong>the</strong> sessions.
