The number of peoplescreened has doubled <strong>from</strong> 353 in 2006 to 997 in 2008. Overall, <strong>the</strong> SPARC’s program has providedapproximately 2,451 preventive screenings to individuals who would not have had access to preventivecare. SPARCS has expanded its intended audience to not only include senior citizens, but people of allages. The screenings offered to participants has expanded to include: depression, glaucoma, dental, HIV,and bone mass.BARRIERSThe barriers encountered during <strong>the</strong> SPARC event entailed transporting clients to mammographyappointments and lack of public awareness. Efforts to overcome <strong>the</strong>se barriers included:• A SPARC provider is volunteering to transport some of clients to <strong>the</strong>ir mammography appointment• Increasing public awareness through radio announcements, going door-to-door with fliers, advertisingin local news papers and church bulletinsLESSONS LEARNEDIt was learned that <strong>the</strong> community-based model has increased preventive health care among seniors andindividuals of all ages. In addition, it was learned that people want to be healthy and will invest time inpreventive care when it is easily accessible and money is not a barrier.114
