The community identified a need to examine <strong>the</strong>risk factors for this disparity and focused <strong>the</strong>ir assessment in <strong>the</strong> City of Aurora, Colorado.SETTINGAurora, Colorado is <strong>the</strong> third largest city in Colorado, and is situated adjacent to <strong>the</strong> City of Denver inArapahoe County. In Aurora, fourteen percent of <strong>the</strong> population is African American compared to fourpercent in <strong>the</strong> state of Colorado.PROJECTAurora Healthy Baby Initiative is a community collaborative formed to examine <strong>the</strong> perinatal periods ofrisk (PPOR) in <strong>the</strong> African American community in Aurora to provide data to guide an action plan toimprove African American birth outcomes. Community collaboratives to examine health disparities havebeen supported by both <strong>the</strong> National Institute of Medicine and Healthy People 2010.The collaborative was created by Tri-County Health Department, <strong>the</strong> local public health department; <strong>the</strong>Healthy Start Project, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment; <strong>the</strong> Colorado chapter of<strong>the</strong> March of Dimes; and <strong>the</strong> City of Aurora.ACCOMPLISHMENTS/RESULTSIn <strong>the</strong> Fall of 2006, 13 key informant interviews were conducted with local medical professionals, currentcommunity-based organizations, and political leaders in <strong>the</strong> City of Aurora. Information <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> keyinformant interviews indicated a need to ga<strong>the</strong>r expertise and different community perspectives on this10
