2009 <strong>CityMatCH</strong> Urban MCH Leadership <strong>Conference</strong>before, during, and after pregnancy.• Educating policymakers on <strong>the</strong> importance of adequate public and private insurance coverage for oralhealth care for women in <strong>the</strong> perinatal period.• Educating families, health care and child care providers, and o<strong>the</strong>rs who come in contact with youngchildren about dental caries- including how to prevent <strong>the</strong> disease and manage it after onset.ACCOMPLISHMENTS/RESULTSSeveral key documents were developed collaboratively and disseminated to over 4,000 stakeholdersnationally. These include <strong>the</strong> abridged New York State practice guidelines for prenatal and oral healthproviders, as well as a policy brief and consumer document. Many o<strong>the</strong>r resources targeting pregnantwomen, parents, and <strong>the</strong> public have been developed and disseminated. New partnerships have beendeveloped with diverse MCH organizations to reach <strong>the</strong>se populations. A website has been created, andnumerous clinical educational opportunities have been provided to pediatric and general dentists toencourage treatment and referral of pregnant women and infants. Anticipated results include an increasedawareness of <strong>the</strong> importance and safety of oral health care during pregnancy among prenatal providersand oral health providers, leading to increased coordination of care and greater access to treatment.Anticipated results also include increased awareness of <strong>the</strong> importance of oral health and <strong>the</strong> safety ofdental treatment during pregnancy among pregnant women, as well as among maternal and child healthorganizations, policymakers, and <strong>the</strong> general public.78
