128 School of Nursingapplies to all students unless they present (a) a certificate from a physician stating thatsuch immunization is contraindicated, (b) a statement that such immunization would becontrary to the student’s religious beliefs, or (c) documentation of a positive blood titerfor measles and rubella.Meningococcus (Meningitis): All students living in on-campus housing must be vaccinatedagainst Meningococcal disease. The law goes into effect in September <strong>2002</strong>, meaningthat all returning students who plan to live in <strong>University</strong> housing must be immunized orshow proof of immunization within the last five years. Students who are not compliantwith this law will not be permitted to register for classes or move into the dormitories forthe fall term, <strong>2002</strong>. Please note that the State of Connecticut does not require this vaccinefor students who intend to reside off campus.In addition to <strong>University</strong> requirements, all School of Nursing and Medicine studentsmust also meet immunization requirements of the various hospitals in which they willwork. <strong>Yale</strong>–New Haven Hospital requires that, before beginning any clinical work, allstudents with negative serology be successfully vaccinated against hepatitis B and mustascertain that students are immune to polio, mumps, rubeola, rubella, and meningitis.Those refusing the hepatitis B vaccine must do so in writing at the time of matriculation.Furthermore, students should know their antibody status to varicella and any other communicabledisease determined by the hospital. Students must show evidence that theyhave received a tetanus toxoid or tetanus-diphtheria booster within the past ten years.They must also show evidence of a PPD within the past year, or a chest X-ray for individualsknown to be PPD positive.Students who have not met these requirements prior to arrival at <strong>Yale</strong> <strong>University</strong> mustreceive the immunizations from YHP and will be charged accordingly.Any students who will be traveling abroad should make an appointment in the TravelClinic at YUHS at least six to eight weeks prior to departure. In addition, those who areworking in areas where they might encounter blood or fluid exposure must contact theStudent Medicine Department (203.432.0312) at YHP. Such students will be given aseven-day supply of antiretroviral medication at no charge. They will also receiveinstructions about how to handle possible exposure.resource office on disabilitiesThe Resource Office on Disabilities facilitates accommodations for undergraduate andgraduate and professional school students with disabilities who register with and haveappropriate documentation on file in the Resource Office. Early planning is critical.Documentation may be submitted to the Resource Office even though a specific accommodationrequest is not anticipated at the time of registration. It is recommended thatmatriculating students in need of disability-related accommodations at <strong>Yale</strong> <strong>University</strong>contact the Resource Office by June 1. Returning students must contact the ResourceOffice at the beginning of each term to arrange for course and exam accommodations.
