Master’s Programaims and assumptionsThe master’s curriculum is designed to offer students an opportunity to become preparedas practitioners in selected specialties and in research so that they may assume rolesas clinician-scholars. Nurses in advanced practice are professionals committed to thedelivery and study of high-quality clinical service: responsible, accountable, and with theauthority to help shape the health care system of the future. The program of study in theSchool is viewed as preparation for a variety of leadership roles.The <strong>Yale</strong> School of Nursing admits both registered nurses who have a baccalaureatedegree and college graduates with no previous <strong>nursing</strong> education. The graduate nursemoves directly into a chosen area of clinical specialization. The full-time student who isa registered nurse is expected to complete the requirements for the degree in two academicyears. Scheduled part-time study is also available. The Graduate Entry Prespecialtyin Nursing (GEPN) for the college graduate who is not a nurse requires two terms andone summer session in addition to the two-year specialization sequence. Full-time studyis required for GEPN students throughout their program of study. The curriculumplaces emphasis upon clinical competence and <strong>nursing</strong> research. Each student is educatedto function in an expanded role in the specialty area of his or her choice. Employersrecognize the superior preparation <strong>Yale</strong> School of Nursing graduates receive andactively seek to recruit them. A placement office facilitates contacts between students andprospective employers.For those students who wish to pursue a career in research there is an ArticulatedMaster of Science in Nursing/Doctor of Nursing Science option, described on page 56.requirements for the degreeThe degree of Master of Science in Nursing is conferred upon students who have satisfactorilycompleted the chosen course of graduate study at <strong>Yale</strong> and have met the otherconditions prescribed by the School of Nursing. To be eligible for the degree, studentsin the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing must successfully complete a minimumof 80.9 credit hours* and have passed the National Council Licensure Examination—Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN), which is taken by the end of the first specialty year.Students who are registered nurses must present evidence of current Connecticut R.N.licensure and satisfactorily complete a program of study that includes a minimum of 40credit hours to be eligible for the degree. All students are required to maintain activeConnecticut R.N. licensure and CPR certification while enrolled in the School of Nursing.Transfer credits are not accepted. Each student must also submit to the faculty ascholarly inquiry praxis based on investigation of a <strong>nursing</strong>-related health care problem.*One hour of credit per term is given for each hour of classroom work per week; one hour of credit per term isgiven for three hours of clinical work per week.
