Doctor of Nursing Science Program 79must withdraw or petition the Doctoral Program Committee to continue in the program.Decisions are based on the student’s potential for success and the feasibility of theplan for improving the average.curriculumThe Doctor of Nursing Science curriculum is designed to prepare expert nurse scholarsto understand the needs of care and the delivery of care. It is also designed to advance thedevelopment of knowledge that will increase healthy life spans and reduce disparities inhealth among diverse populations. The program provides abundant opportunities forfaculty and student interaction and collaboration, as well as mentoring to learn the fullscope of role responsibilities. Before admission to the program, faculty advisers and studentsare matched based on the student’s stated area of research interest. A series of colloquiaprovides opportunities for faculty and students to interact and collaborate basedon shared interests.Course work is organized in three areas. Conceptual Basis of Nursing Practice andTransmission of Knowledge includes course work in theory development, <strong>nursing</strong> concepts,and principles of teaching and learning. Methods of Inquiry includes researchdesign and methods, measurement, and statistics. Policy includes health policy, and linking<strong>nursing</strong> research and policy.Two areas of research and clinical focus are offered: Management of Health and Illness,and Health Services Delivery and Policy.Cognates may be taken in psychology, human development, ethics, health policy,<strong>nursing</strong>, or any area related to the student’s research, including appropriate courses inmethods.
