Research AffairsMargaret Grey, AssociateDean for Research AffairsPart of one of the world’s most distinguished research universities,the Yale School of Nursing has always been proudof its role in advancing human knowledge. The School wasfounded with a mission embracing service and scholarship,two interdependent endeavors. The commitment to theseendeavors remains strong, as expressed in the recentlyreaffirmed mission statement. The faculty recognize andaccept nursing’s responsibility to shape health care deliverysystems. In training nursing leaders, the School relies heavilyon its deep tradition of excellence in research.One significant distinction between the Yale School ofNursing and other schools of nursing is the integration oftheory and practice, with the appreciation of practice as thetheory-generating base in the discipline. At Yale, scholarshipis energized by the interchange between practice and knowledge, based on the belief thattheory develops from practice and then, in turn, influences it. The Yale School of Nursing’srole in the development of nursing science is not only recognized, but is commendedin any history of the discipline.Faculty research at the Yale School of Nursing is changing the way nursing is practiced.Extensive research efforts exist in such areas as self and family management ofchronic illness, especially cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS; vulnerablepopulations; and family nursing. Researchers view the process of systematicinquiry as collaborative and multidisciplinary, with research teams often includingexperts across specializations.
