Thedissertation is intended to demonstrate that the student has competence in the chosenarea of study and has conducted research of an independent nature.The Articulated Master of Science in Nursing/Doctor of Nursing Science option isdescribed on page 56.admission requirements and application proceduresThe minimum requirements for admission to the Doctor of Nursing Science program are:1. A master’s degree in <strong>nursing</strong>.2. A 3.2 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale for all graduate-level work.3. Competitive Graduate Record Examination scores (taken no more than five yearsprior to application).4. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants whose first languageis other than English.5. Previous course work in statistics and research methods.6. Admissions essays as described in the application packet.7. Academic or professional references from three individuals, one of whom must bedoctorally prepared.Students are required to take and pass, with a grade of High Pass or higher, a basicstatistics examination that is given the week prior to the beginning of fall term of the firstyear. If the results are not acceptable, students are required to enroll in 529a during thefall term of the first year for no credit.Applicants are also encouraged to submit evidence of scholarship in the form of athesis, an in-depth literature review, or a published article or manuscript. Candidateswith advanced practice experience are preferred. Applicants are screened by the DoctoralProgram Committee and qualified applicants are interviewed by a member of the committee.This interview is required and is intended to allow assessment of the applicant’sgeneral knowledge of <strong>nursing</strong>, understanding of the selected area of focus, and the largerscope of <strong>nursing</strong> science.Written credentials and a $50 application fee must be submitted by February 1 andapplicants are notified by April 1. Applications submitted after February 1 are processedon a rolling admissions basis, if places are available. Selection is based on the potentialfor success in the program, potential for leadership and scholarship in <strong>nursing</strong>, andmatch with faculty research interests.grading systemThe grading system is Honors, 92–100; High Pass, 83–91; Pass, 74–82; and Fail, 73 andbelow. Students must maintain a High Pass average to remain in good standing. If theaverage falls below High Pass in a given term, the student is placed on academic probation.If the student is unable to remove academic probation within one term, the student
