CentersCenter for Excellence in Chronic Illness CareRuth McCorkle, Director,Center for Excellence inChronic Illness CareThe Center for Excellence in Chronic Illness Care wasestablished in 1999 to study the unique experience ofchronic illness as it affects patients, families, and survivors.Work in the center focuses on AIDS/HIV, cancer, cardiovasculardisease, and diabetes, all areas in which YSN facultyhave a strong tradition of research. The center’s ultimateaim is to examine not just specific diseases, but the paradigmof chronic illness, the impact that it has on individuals, andthe ways that the health care system can better help patientsand families manage that impact to achieve a better qualityof life. The School’s longstanding tradition of clinical scholarshipensures that the research agenda of this center isformulated by scholars actively engaged in care and, moreimportant, scholars who look at problems from a patientcenteredperspective. Chronic illness by its very natureusually involves a multidisciplinary team of providers. Drawing on the intellectualresources of this premier research institution, the Center for Excellence in Chronic IllnessCare includes <strong>Yale</strong> scholars from related disciplines, such as medicine and publichealth.Center for Health Policy and EthicsSally S.Cohen,Director,Centerfor Health Policy and EthicsThe Center for Health Policy and Ethics is the School’sfocal point for high-quality analyses of local, state, federal,and international issues in health policy and ethics. Giventhe School’s longstanding commitment to shape institutionsthat improve health for all, the center offers innovativestrategies for how the health care delivery system can bestmeet people’s needs and improve health policy outcomes. Itpromotes excellence in the scholarship and teaching ofhealth policy and ethics across programs and specialties.The center features the unique integration of faculty expertisein health policy, ethics, clinical practice, and research.The center’s core faculty teach health policy and ethicscourses in the master’s and doctoral programs. The centeralso houses the Program for the Study of Health Care Relationships,a multidisciplinary statewide project, which features a partnership with the<strong>University</strong> of Connecticut School of Nursing, and is funded by the Patrick and CatherineWeldon Donaghue Medical Research Foundation.
