Specialization provides for not only indepthknowledge of a specialty area (cardiovascular or oncology), but also the opportunityto deliver continuity of care through assessment, teaching, case management, andevaluation.In the first year of study, emphasis is placed on developing skill in health historytaking, physical assessment, and assessment of the elected specialty population. Studentsstudy research and theory as a basis for developing conceptual models for advanced<strong>nursing</strong> practice. During the final year the focus is on clinical <strong>nursing</strong> management androle development as an advanced practice nurse. Leadership, change, case management,and consultation are emphasized. Master’s Program 61The course plan for scheduled part-time study can be obtained from the Student AffairsOffice.Oncology Nurse Practitioner TrackThe Oncology Nurse Practitioner Track is designed to prepare advanced practice oncologynurses to assess and manage the care of patients with cancer and their families acrossthe continuum of the illness. Principles of holistic care are integrated throughout thecore body of specialty oncology knowledge in the curriculum. Courses are taken fromthe Adult Advanced Practice Nursing specialty and the Adult Nurse Practitioner specialty.On completion of the Oncology Nurse Practitioner track, students are eligible forAdult Nurse Practitioner Certification through the American Nurses’ CredentialingCenter. Students may elect the Supportive Care concentration (described on page 71),which is designed to enhance the knowledge of supportive care for patients in activetreatment and those with progressive disease, across care settings.In the first year of study, the clinical emphasis is on history taking, physical assessment,diagnostic reasoning, differential diagnosis, and management of primary healthproblems in adults. Specialty oncology knowledge, research, and statistics are therequired didactic content. During the final year of study, the focus is on managing complexoncologic problems and developing a model of evidence-based practice as anadvanced oncology nurse. Courses include pharmacology, symptom management,health promotion, and clinical practica in diverse sites and settings.
