Required information has not beenreceived from a large number <strong>of</strong> States/UTs,hence the same has been indicated accordinglyin Tables 14.11 <strong>and</strong> 14.12 (page No. 184-187<strong>and</strong> 188)<strong>Police</strong> Personal killed on dutyA total <strong>of</strong> 578 <strong>Police</strong> Personal were killedon duty in all the <strong>Police</strong> Forces <strong>of</strong> States/UTs<strong>and</strong> CPOs during 2011-12.The maximum number <strong>of</strong> causalities hasbeen suffered by the <strong>Police</strong> Forces in UttarPradesh (135), Jharkh<strong>and</strong> (43) <strong>and</strong> (29) Punjab& West Bengal etc. <strong>Police</strong> Forces engaged intackling serious law <strong>and</strong> order <strong>and</strong> internalsecurity problems such as the State <strong>Police</strong>Forces, BSF, CRPF etc. have suffered maximumcausalities. However, the all India trend <strong>of</strong>seven years 2005-06 to 2011-12 shows thatnumber <strong>of</strong> police personnel killed during theseyears has reduced significantly from 2008-09to 2011-12. Details are given in Table – 14.1.(Page No. 174)At State level, the highest number <strong>of</strong> policepersonnel killed on duty were 135 in UttarPradesh followed by 43 in Jharkh<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> 29in Punjab & West Bengal. At CPO level, out <strong>of</strong>total 578 police personnel killed on duty during2011-12, the highest number <strong>of</strong> 85 policemenkilled were from BSF followed by 57 from CRPF<strong>and</strong> 21 belongs to CISF.<strong>Police</strong> Medals for GallantryThese Medals are awarded to the policepersonnel for exhibiting conspicuous gallantryin saving life <strong>and</strong> property, or in preventingcrime or arresting dangerous criminals. During2011-12 a total <strong>of</strong> 102 President’s <strong>Police</strong> Medalsfor Gallantry (PPMG) <strong>and</strong> 186 <strong>Police</strong> Medals for171
