CHAPTER 2POLICE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICESState Wise Data on:• <strong>Police</strong> Zones/Ranges & Districts• <strong>Police</strong> Sub-Division/Circles• Sanctioned <strong>and</strong> Actual <strong>Police</strong> Stations(Rural & Urban)• Sanctioned <strong>and</strong> Actual <strong>Police</strong> Posts(Rural & Urban)• <strong>Police</strong> Stations for special purposes• Armed <strong>Police</strong> Battalions• Women <strong>Police</strong> Stations• Cities with <strong>Police</strong> CommissioneratesThis chapter provides a glimpse <strong>of</strong> statewisedata as on 1.1.<strong>2012</strong>, on field leveladministrative <strong>Police</strong> Units namely <strong>Police</strong>Zones, <strong>Police</strong> Ranges, <strong>Police</strong> Districts, <strong>Police</strong>Sub-Division/Circles, <strong>Police</strong> Stations (Rural &Urban), <strong>Police</strong> Posts (Rural & Urban), <strong>Police</strong>Stations for special purposes, Number <strong>of</strong>Armed <strong>Police</strong> Battalions; Women <strong>Police</strong>Stations <strong>and</strong> their locations <strong>and</strong> Cities with<strong>Police</strong> Commissioner System.An analysis <strong>of</strong> data on police administrative<strong>of</strong>fices shows that the whole <strong>of</strong> India is dividedinto 100 <strong>Police</strong> Zones, 177 <strong>Police</strong> Rangescovering 708 <strong>Police</strong> Districts. There were atotal <strong>of</strong> 14,185 <strong>Police</strong> Stations in the countryas on 01.01.<strong>2012</strong>. The state <strong>of</strong> Andhra Pradeshhad maximum 1679 <strong>Police</strong> Stations followedby 1515 in Uttar Pradesh <strong>and</strong> minimum 2 inUnion Territory <strong>of</strong> D&N Haveli & 5 in Daman<strong>and</strong> Diu. Details are given in Table – 2.1. (PageNo. 21)<strong>Police</strong> StationsOut <strong>of</strong> a total <strong>of</strong> 14,185 Sanctioned <strong>Police</strong>Stations, as many as 9,122 (64.30%) werelocated in rural area while a total <strong>of</strong> 4,612(32.51%) were in urban area <strong>and</strong> the remaining451 (3.18%) were the Government Railway<strong>Police</strong> Stations.For the fourth time Data on existing <strong>Police</strong>Stations has been collected & compiled. Theinformation has been received from all states/UTs. Details are given in Table – 2.2. (PageNo. 22)<strong>Police</strong>-PostsLike existing <strong>Police</strong> Stations Data onexisting <strong>Police</strong> Posts has also been collected &compiled for the fourth time. Of the total <strong>of</strong>8.368 Sanctioned <strong>Police</strong> Posts in the country ason 01.01.<strong>2012</strong>, there were 4802 <strong>Police</strong> Postsin rural area while 3,566 <strong>Police</strong> Posts werelocated in urban area.Data on actual rural & urban <strong>Police</strong> Posts hasbeen received from all the States/UTs exceptMaharashtra. Therefore, some<strong>of</strong> the States have all the above <strong>of</strong>fices whilein others states those were either not set upor have since been abolished. Therefore, somevariation may be noticed as compared to theinformation given in the previous years <strong>of</strong> thisdocument.19
