Arnica montana.POLLEN AND SEED VIABILITY OF ARNICA MONTANA(ASTERACEAE) IN CONNECTION WITH THE REALIZATION OF ITSREPRODUCTIVE CAPACITYE. Yankova-Tsvetkova, G. Baldjiev, P. Yurukova-Grancharova and A. VitkovaInstitute of Botany, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Acad. G. Bonchev Street,Bl. 23, 1113 Sofia; E-mail: georgibaldjiev@gmail.comArnica montana is a long-lived, rosette-forming perennial that is a protected plantin Europe. Due to its intensive collection from the nature, it is now as a rare andendangered species. It is collected for medicinal use because its active componentshave strong anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the study isto estimate two main aspects of the reproductive biology of this useful species, namely pollen and seed viability, in connection with its reproductive success thatinfluences the character and size of the populations. Stainability of fresh maturepollen grains was determined by acetocarmine technique. The pollen grains staineddeeply red and looking normal were counted as viable, while weakly stained orcolorless were recognized as nonviable. Seed viability was tested with atetrazolium test that is based on the visual reduction (development of red staining)of 2,3,5,-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride. Statistical data analysis wasperformed. The results obtained show an approximately high pollen (83.77%) andseed (70.65%) viability. On this basis, it can be assumed a successful realization ofthe reproductive potential that leads to keep the stable state of the populations ofArnica montana.109
