MICROBIOLOGICAL INDICATORS IN CONTAMINATED RIVERSECTOR ASSOCIATED WITH BIOREMEDIATION POTENTIAL OFSYSTEMY. Todorova, Y. In theriver ecosystem, the effects of complex pollution with organics, heavy metals,petroleum products and other difficult-biodegradable compounds have beenobserved from decades. But this part of the river, however, is the subject ofintensive hydrotechnical engineering in recent years /construction of a cascade of 9mini-hydroelectric power stations/ and this strongly poses the question ofecological state improvement and achievement of high energy efficiency. Theanalysis of natural microbial communities in river ecosystem is one of themechanisms for assessing self-purification capacity and implementation ofdifferent bioremediation techniques for reduction of damages caused by the oldcontaminations. Spatial and seasonal variations in water and sediment microbialindicators were identified in 5 sampling sites in river and in 2 sampling sites inmicro-reservoirs at the first two functioning hydro-electric powers. The verifiedmicrobial indicators were used to evaluate the water and sediment quality. Thetotal count of heterotrophic bacteria is a process indicator for efficacy of aheterotrophic biodegradation and biotransformation of organic pollutants. Thecoliforms count is an indicator for the faecal contamination.
