EXTRACTS OF ENDEMIC AND RARE PLANTS AS POTENTIALSOURCES OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITYM. NikolovaInstitute of Botany, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 23 Acad. G. Bonchev Str.,1113 Sofia; E-mail: milena_n@bio.bas.bgBulgarian Flora is known for its exceptional diversity of species. Around 140species are endemic to Bulgaria, and over 500 species are legally protected forbiodiversity. Significant proportion of these species is unstudied because of theirlimited quantity. With the development of science less plant material is requiredfor its analysis of biologically active substances and pharmacological actions, which allow us to enter into this "red" category of plants. The purpose of presentstudy was to scan the endemic and rare plants, taxonomically related to wellresearchedmedicinal plants for antioxidant activity. Antioxidant activity of totalmethanol extracts was determined by DPPH method. Twenty extracts of endemicand rare plants were examined. Among them the extracts of Salvia sacabiosifoliaLam. IC 50 =19.72 µg/ml, Rhodiola rosea L. IC 50 =20.60 µg/ml, Salvia ringens Sibthet Sm. IC 50 =25.71 µg/ml, Geranium caeruleatum Schur IC 50 =29.38 µg/ml,Veronica rhodopoea (Velen.) Degen. IC 50 =39.79 µg/ml, Haberlea rhodopensisIC 50 =49.29 µg/ml Veronica kellereri Deg. et Urm. IC 50 =56.93 µg/ml, Artemisiapontica L. IC 50 =61.2 µg/ml were the most active. The IC 50 values presented, whichindicate the concentration at which inhibits 50% of the radicals are under 100ug/ml, which is a very good indicator. In this range are the values of extracts frommedicinal plants with proven antioxidant properties such as Salvia officinalis L.,Veronica officinalis L., Geranium sanguineum L., which were used as positivecontrols. Some of the promising species such as Salvia scabiosifolia, S. ringens,Haberlea rodopensis became objects of interest by specialists of biotechnologywhich explore the possibilities for micropropagation of these species, allowingtheir further study and conservation.115
