In Bulgaria one of the mostcritical sites is middle part of Iskar River. The river ecosystem suffers the effects oflong-term pollution with municipal wastewaters of Sofia city and wastes fromdifferent hazardous industries. The sediments have accumulated highly toxic anddifficult-biodegradable pollutants - heavy metals, petrochemicals, etc. However,the growing need for using renewable energy sources stimulates the developmentof projects aimed at the utilization of hydropower in this section of river.Nowadays, the construction and initial functioning of cascade of 9 mini-hydroelectric powers in the middle part of the Iskar River is in progress. The effectivefuture operation of cascade needs an appropriate sediment bioremediation and thefirst step is the proposal of strategy for monitoring and assessment of naturalpotential of microbial communities to transform and eliminate the pollutants. Theproposed strategy for monitoring of the microbial diversity will follow the mainphysiological groups of microorganisms directly involved in biotransformationprocesses and effects of hazardous pollutants on functional level. The strategyincludes analysis of hydrochemical, microbiological and enzymological parametersof sediment.
