THE SYSTEM OF PROTECTED TERRITORIES AND ZONES AND THECULTURAL AND HISTORICAL HERITAGE IN OSOGOVO MOUNTAINAS POSSIBILITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOCALCOMMUNITIESG. Stanimirova 1 , M. Ljubenova 1 , P. The Bulgarian part encompasses one forth of the total area and falls inthe administrative borders of the municipalities of Kjustendil and Nevestino. Inorder to secure the conservation of the biodiversity of Osogovo, a system ofprotected territories has been established. It includes strict and supported reserves,protected areas, natural monuments and protected zones, which are in the frames ofthe ecological network Natura 2000. The territory of the two municipalities is richon cultural and historical heritage. The combination of protected zones andterritories that secure the conservation of the biodiversity and the cultural andhistorical landmarks in the area give the possibility for attracting the public interesttowards the border area of Osogovo. An ongoing project aiming at the effectiveprotection of the biodiversity of Osogovo by establishment of transboundaryprotected territory in cooperation with local institutions and stakeholders isimplemented. The improvement and enlargement of the system of protectedterritories in Osogovo by transboundary cooperation with the Republic ofMacedonia as well as by collaboration with the Bulgarian institutions, citizens andnon-governmental organisations, the linkage of the protected territories with thecreation of a regional brand and advertisement of the region give possibilities fordevelopment of sustainable activities supporting the socio-economic improvementof the local communities.
