Tomov, K. Trencheva, G. TrenchevUniversity of Forestry, 10 Kliment Ohridski Blvd., 1756 Sofia, Bulgaria,E-mail: rtomov@yahoo.comRapidly accelerating human trade, tourism, transport and travel over the pastcentury have dramatically enhanced the spread of invasive species. Bulgaria isparticularly vulnerable to invasive alien species, since is situated at the crossroadof three continents. Some of invasive arthropods pose serious threats tobiodiversity. The aim of our study was to make an Accurate inventory of alienarthropods in Bulgaria. The paper presents preliminary results of the project “Alienterrestrial arthropods and their impact on biodiversity in Bulgaria”. List and currentpopulation status of invasive arthropods of ecological importance in Bulgaria arepresented. A risk analysis and impact assessment also for species establishedelsewhere in Europe and potentially invasive in Bulgaria showed that most riskypathways for alien arthropods in Bulgaria appeared to be the plant trade, particularly ornamental plants for planting and cut flowers. The pathway ofinvasion of species is discussed. We recommend putting in place efficientmonitoring programmes to detect the entry and establishment of the most expectedinvaders without economic concern, since they usually enter a new regionaccidentally and are often detected too late to be eradicated. Investigations on theimpact of invasive species should also focus on abundant species in poorly studiedecosystems, in which important ecological impact may have been overlooked.Developing national strategies against invasive species and quarantine pests isneeded both to protect the country from the detrimental effect of insect invasionsas well as to fulfil international commitments.55
