BUSINESS AND BIODIVERSITY IN BULGARIAN PRIVATE SECTORR. Decision VIII/17 of COP8 ofCBD adopted in 2006 the first decision under the Convention focusing exclusivelyon business engagement with following argumentation: The private sector isarguably the least engaged of all stakeholders in the implementation of theConvention, yet the daily activities of business and industry have major impact onbiodiversity. Encouraging business and industry to adopt and promote goodpractice could make a significant contribution towards the 2010 target and theobjectives of CBD. The Global Environmental Facility elaborated a Strategy toEnhance Engagement with the Private Sector. UNEP elaborated an FinancingInitiative to support access to investments for biodiversity. One of the variousnumber of initiatives is the newly launched EU Business & BiodiverstityCampaign (B&B) with coordinator the Global Nature Fund. This campaign aims toemphasize the meaning of biological diversity and invite companies to get moreinvolved in the protection and preservation of nature. The present papersummarizes first global and European programs and initiatives on Business andBiodiversity.Second represents results of interviews with Bulgarian companies from differentbranches using biodiversity: phytopharmacy, cosmetics, furniture- and organicfarm producers etc. Bulgarian companies are in general positive about ideas ofB&B campaign, but emphasize lack of liquidity and public support to start ownactions.158
