Major tools to build up the European research area in biodiversity. In this talk, Iwill give an overview of major tools and mechanisms that face these challengesand support research, promote transfer of knowledge and develop shared strategiesin the field of biodiversity at a European level. In particular, the key role andactivities of three complementary tools will be presented:- the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) is a forum atwhich natural and social scientists, policy-makers and other stakeholders identify, structure, and focus the strategically important research needed for biodiversity inEurope.- the ERA Net BiodivERsA promotes cooperation and coordination of researchactivities on biodiversity at regional level among Member and Associated States ofthe EU. The ERA Net scheme is aiming to make of the European Research Area areality, through the networking of research activities and the mutual opening ofnational and European research programmes. In more practical terms, the objectiveis to support cooperation between national research funding agencies, to promotejoint funding activities (e.g. joint calls for proposals) from national researchbudgets. This creates a mechanism additional to EU funding (which is limited),enabling scientists from different European countries to work more closelytogether across boarders. The ultimate aim of ERA-nets is to reduce thefragmentation of research across the European Research Area, and also enablenational systems to take on tasks collectively that they would not have been able totackle independently. More particularly, the ambitions of BiodivERsA translateinto four sub-objectives, around which the project was built:- Network funding agencies in the field of biodiversity research- Coordinate research programmes, at strategic and management levels- Develop and implement one or several joint calls- Build a platform for sustained cooperation between funding agencies.- the KNUE project aims at developing a Knowledge Network for EUropeanexpertise on biodiversity and ecosystem services to inform policy making andeconomic sectors. These tools, and some others, play a major role for shaping the ERA onbiodiversity. There are very good reasons why they were created, and why theywill continue: European funding organisations for research have to efficientlyaddress a common agenda based on a shared strategy, and have to efficientlydisseminate research's results, to face the European and international grandchallenge that is biodiversity and ecosystem services.23
