An artificial she-elephant like a decoyis placed over it. The lustful animal rushes towards it andis thrown into the deep well, where it is kept for severaldays hungry and thirsty. When it is taken out it is so weakand feeble that it is put under the iron goad for the entirelife. From all this, it is pretty clear that the soulswhich are considered <strong>as</strong> bound in lower forms of creationare so much over-powered by <strong>one</strong> sense, where lies thesafety of human souls who are endlessly enticed by all thefive powerful scnses of sight, smell, sound, t<strong>as</strong>te, andtouch. By sheer habit, it h<strong>as</strong> become mired, roaming theworld over like a wild elephant in a forest. Feeding faton the lusts of the flesh, from moment to moment, it h<strong>as</strong>grown out of all proportions. The spiritual disciplines areirksome and galling to it for they impose serious restraintson its free movement. This is why the mind does not relishany discipline, and plays all kinds of tricks to evadethem, posing at times, <strong>as</strong> an h<strong>one</strong>st broker pleading onbehalf of our friends and relations and whispering ser-
