KARMA: THE WHEEL THAT BINDS7Ithe clever device of nature to maintain this existence. Thelaw of karma sees to it that we are paid an eye for an eye,and a tooth for a tooth, in the shape of joy or suffering.It is the goading whip in the hidden hands of nature.The mind contracts karma, puts a covering on the souland rules the body through the organs and the senses.Although it is the soul that imparts strength to the mind,the latter h<strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong>sumed sovereignty and is governing thesoul instead. Control of the mind, therefore, is the firststep to Spirituality. Victory over the mind is victory overthe world. Even accomplished Yogis and Mystics whocan transcend to high spiritual realms are not left untouchedby the hand of karma. Saints cl<strong>as</strong>sify karm<strong>as</strong>into three distinct groups, <strong>as</strong> follows:I. SANCH~T (stored): Good or bad deeds that stand toour account <strong>as</strong> earned and contracted in all previousbodies of the order df Creation, counting from the dayof the first appearance of life on earth. Al<strong>as</strong>! Man knowsnothing about them or their extent.11. PRARABDHA (fate or destiny) : The result and effect ofwhich h<strong>as</strong> brought man into his present body and h<strong>as</strong> tobe paid off in this life. The reactions of these karm<strong>as</strong>come to us unexpectedly and unperceived and we haveno control over them whatsoever. Good or bad, we haveto tolerate or bear this karma, laughing or weeping, <strong>as</strong>it happens to suit us.111. KRIYAMAN (account of our actions and deeds in thepresent body) : This is distinct from the above menti<strong>one</strong>dtwo groups, <strong>as</strong> here, man is free to do exactly <strong>as</strong> he ple<strong>as</strong>es,within certain limits.
