Instead of controlling the senses it is now subjectto them and thus constantly wanders from <strong>one</strong> subject toanother without anything to rest upon. If by good luckit is comparatively free from the anxieties of life andhears of the worlds within and occ<strong>as</strong>ionally h<strong>as</strong> a pointglimpse of the mere outskirts of these worlds, then insteadof going in and bearing m<strong>as</strong>tery over them, it isal<strong>as</strong>!-heldout by "fame, the l<strong>as</strong>t infirmity of nobleminds," <strong>as</strong> Milton calls it. The fame and honor givenby people keep it out just <strong>as</strong> much <strong>as</strong> ears are held bysweet music, and the eye is held by attractive objects. Inthe guise of doing good to others it deceives itself and inignorance knows not that the valuable time is being lost.First know thyself and then preach.
