The New Life in GodLovewHAT IS THIS LOVE of which all mystics, E<strong>as</strong>ternand Western, have spoken so insistently? Is it likethe love of the earth that we know? If you study thebonds of earthly love, you will find that at some point oranother a trace of self-<strong>as</strong>sertion is present in every c<strong>as</strong>e.Parent and child, friend and friend, man and wife; eachis involved in a more or less strong drive for possession.It is a love that can often rise to great heights of selfsacrificeand yet it is a love that is not wholly selfless.But the "Love" of which the mystics speak is a lovethat must be completely purified of the self. If <strong>one</strong> h<strong>as</strong>not attained complete purification in this respect, <strong>one</strong>'slove is still not perfect and not truly acceptable in theeyes of the Lord. And so the love of mystics is <strong>one</strong> inwhich <strong>one</strong> completely and unreservedly surrenders <strong>one</strong>'sself to <strong>one</strong>'s love. The seeker who, having found a trueM<strong>as</strong>ter, h<strong>as</strong> developed such absolute love for him, steadilypurifies himself of all imperfections and makes himselfa fit recipient of Divine Grace. You may well <strong>as</strong>k whythere is this insistent stress on complete self-surrender onthe mystic path. The answer is simple: without this absolutesurrender of the l<strong>as</strong>t vestiges of ego and selfhood,
