HUMILITY 127True humility is freedom from all consciousness ofself, which includes freedom from the consciousness ofhumility. The truly humble man never knows that he ishumble."'The humble man makes no fuss. He is at harmony withhimself and others. He is gifted with a wondrous feelingof peace. He feels safe and secure, like a ship in harbor,unaffected by howling storms and l<strong>as</strong>hing waves. He h<strong>as</strong>found refuge at the Lotus Feet of the Lord and thestorms of changing circumstances have no power overhim. He ftds light <strong>as</strong> air. The burdens which we carryall our life--the burden of the self and its desires-heh<strong>as</strong> laid <strong>as</strong>ide, and he is ever calm and serene. Havinggiven up everything, he h<strong>as</strong> nothing to lose, and veteverything belongs to him, for he is of God, and God isin him. Having broken the bondage of desire, he is <strong>as</strong>happy with a piece of dry bread <strong>as</strong> with a sumptuousmeal. In every situation and circumstance of life, heblesses the Names of God.He who would be humble regards himself <strong>as</strong> a student.He learns many new things, but what is more difficult,he unlearns many things he h<strong>as</strong> learned. A scholar cameto a Saint and said, "0 Seer of the Secret, tell me whatI may do to live the life divine." And the Saint said tohim, "Go, unlearn what thou h<strong>as</strong>t learnt and then returnand sit before me.""3He who would walk the way of humility must renouncehis earlier ways of living.
