GARRISON ARTILLERY. 75was fired by a company <strong>of</strong> artillery under Major Nicholson.In 1848 Colonel Hayne became assistant adjutant-general in<strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-Colonel W. H. Robinson, who had diedshortly before. The death <strong>of</strong> Major Thomas L. Nicholsonoccurred in this year, and <strong>the</strong> vacancy thus caused was filledby <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> Captain S. K. Foster to <strong>the</strong> majority.Mr. G. Sidney Smith, <strong>of</strong> St. John, remembers <strong>the</strong> funeral <strong>of</strong>Major Nicholson, at which he says <strong>the</strong> artillery was presentunder Captains Foster, Melick, Wright and Stewart.The "Courier" <strong>of</strong> 19th May, 1849, contains <strong>the</strong> followingaccount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixty-sixth anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>landing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Loyalists, which had been observed on <strong>the</strong> previousday:"The anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> landing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Loyalists in thiscity in 1783 was celebrated yesterday. Flags were to be seenfloating from <strong>the</strong> dwellings <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> descendants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>loyalists and from o<strong>the</strong>r conspicuous situations, and some <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> vessels in <strong>the</strong> harbor were bedecked with <strong>the</strong>ir colors.The St. John companies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Brunswick</strong> <strong>Regiment</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Artillery</strong> fired a royal salute at noon and marched through <strong>the</strong>streets preceded by one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amateur bands playing somelively airs. In <strong>the</strong> evening Queen's square and its environswere crowded by a dense mass <strong>of</strong> people to witness a display<strong>of</strong> fireworks. The exhibition exceeded anything <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kindever seen here, and was grand and beautiful in <strong>the</strong> extreme,and reflected great credit upon all concerned in getting it up.The committee <strong>of</strong> management were Major S. K. Foster, <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Artillery</strong> ; Captain T. E. G. Tisdale, City Rifles, and Mr.John Sears, all descendants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first settlers <strong>of</strong> St. John."The annual muster <strong>of</strong> this year was held on <strong>the</strong> 9th October.The 1 8th <strong>of</strong> May <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next year was observed by <strong>the</strong>firing <strong>of</strong> a salute and a display <strong>of</strong> fire works on <strong>the</strong> Queen'ssquare similar to that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous year.There were several promotions in 1849, among <strong>the</strong>m that
