There are <strong>of</strong>course <strong>the</strong> <strong>records</strong> <strong>of</strong> promotions, a few salutes fired in commemoration<strong>of</strong> public events and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r trivial incidentswhich constitute <strong>the</strong> history even <strong>of</strong> a regiment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> line in atime <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ound peace. The militia laws <strong>of</strong> this period didnot require a great deal <strong>of</strong> service from <strong>the</strong> citizen soldiery.Generally one or two days drill by companies and one day'smuster by battalions was considered sufficient, but little as itwas this much was required until long after <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> regiment. To-day <strong>the</strong>re, are few incidents in <strong>the</strong> routine<strong>of</strong> any corps that are thought to be history. Inspections andreviews, drills and salutes are mostly a matter <strong>of</strong> course, and<strong>the</strong> writer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next century will probably think that we havedone as little to deserve perpetuation as some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> presentday may think our predecessors have done. Yet <strong>the</strong>y, as wellas <strong>the</strong>ir successors, did all that <strong>the</strong>re was to be done, andthough <strong>the</strong> record may appear somewhat barren, yet it is one<strong>of</strong> which any soldier may well be proud, that <strong>of</strong> duty peri'.):mcd.
