There was a grand reviewat Torryburn on 25th September at which <strong>the</strong> artillery and allO<strong>the</strong>r forces acquitted <strong>the</strong>mselves creditably They were accompaniedon this occasion by Captain Morris' battery <strong>of</strong>Royal<strong>Artillery</strong>.There was not <strong>the</strong> same ecla. attending <strong>the</strong> reviews <strong>of</strong> thatportion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> active militia which was not enrolled in <strong>the</strong>volunteer companies. By an absurd provision in <strong>the</strong> law <strong>the</strong>ywere called out for one day's drill in each year. Of course<strong>the</strong>y formed <strong>the</strong> butt for all who chose to jeer, and <strong>the</strong> descriptionsin <strong>the</strong> newspapers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time are most ludicrous.No training was given or could be attempted and <strong>the</strong>se farcesserved simply for <strong>the</strong> enrolment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men.During <strong>the</strong> year Captain Hurd Peters retired from <strong>the</strong>command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Portland battery, which he had brought intoexistence and which had been very successful under his charge.He was succeeded in command by Lieutenant Simonds,who had been gazetted 27th April. Lieutenants Kirk andRankin also retired and Gunner Edward Jones, <strong>of</strong> B. L.Peters' battery and Richard Farmer obtained commissionsin <strong>the</strong> battery.Captain Knox's battery at Gagetown went out <strong>of</strong> service.Captain Chestnut's at Fredericton was streng<strong>the</strong>ned by <strong>the</strong>appointment <strong>of</strong> Geo. C. Peters and John M. Stratton aslieutenants. The latter was drowned in <strong>the</strong> Saxby gale <strong>of</strong>1869. Lieutenant Quinton was also transferred from CaptainM. H. Peters' battery to <strong>the</strong> county militia.The remarks <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant Jago, R. A., who inspected <strong>the</strong>artillery at St. John on September loth, were very complimentary.Without underrating <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r batteries he particularly
